Years ago, I was a psychotherapist working in the health service. I'd done NLP training.
I'm good at helping people. I've done it all my life.
But when I started building an online business? I was terrible at charging for my services.
I once coached someone completely free for over a year because I couldn't bring myself to ask for payment.
On sales calls, I'd be so anxious I could barely think straight.
And when it came time to name my price? I'd literally drop it as the words were coming out of my mouth .
"I'll say $300... no wait, that's too much... maybe $200..."
I had one guy who kept saying "I can't afford that, but I really need your help."
I ended up charging him $50 per session. In 2012.
He didn't even show up half the time.
I felt completely trapped.
I knew I was good at what I did. But I couldn't charge properly. I couldn't "sell" without feeling like I was manipulating people.
And I definitely couldn't pay my bills.
Then something shifted...
I started posting videos on YouTube consistently - one specific topic, posted weekly.
And people started approaching me .
When I'd get on a call with them, something was completely different.
I didn't have to "sell" them. They'd already decided.
The conversation would go:
Them: "So what do you charge for coaching?"
Me: names price, bracing for negotiation
Them: "Okay, where do I send the money?"
No argument. No negotiation. No objection handling.
I suddenly realised... the pre-selling was already done.
They'd watched my videos. They knew who I was, how I thought, what my philosophy was.

I do this exact same thing when I buy something.
I create an emotional sense of already having it, already being the person who owns that thing.
By the time I click "buy," the decision is already made.
I've sold myself.
That's when it crystallised:
We ALL sell to ourselves.
Nobody twists our arm. And if they tried, we'd run in the opposite direction.
So if I could create content that helped people sell themselves ...
They get genuinely helped. I get a loyal, happy customer who's already decided.
No manipulation. No pressure. No feeling pushy.
The traditional approach to selling teaches you to pitch AFTER someone has already made up their mind.
But by that point, if they haven't already sold themselves, you're fighting an uphill battle.
You have to convince them.
Overcome objections.
Create urgency.
Apply pressure.
And that's why it feels pushy - because it is pushy.
You help people sell themselves BEFORE they ever see your offer.
By the time they land on your sales page or get your pitch email, they've already decided.
They're just looking for the details and the buy button.
People don't buy solutions to problems if they can help it - they look for free answers. We all do it.
So why not give that to them?
But almost no problem just sits alone. It has context. It's connected to other issues - and when they realise that - they'll buy.
Let me explain...
Someone knows they have a problem - let's call it Problem A.
Maybe it's "my email open rates are too low" or "I don't know what to write in my social posts" or "I struggle to get traffic to my blog."
They create content that partially solves Problem A, (in this case, low email open rates), then immediately pitch their product.
In some cases, the content completely solves problem A.
But now either the person has no idea who you are or you just solved their problem with the free content.
Why would they buy?
You solve Problem A completely. Genuinely helpful. No holding back.
But in solving it, you reveal Problem B - the adjacent problem they didn't realise was the real issue.
Something like this:
"Of course, having better email open rates is great... but if you don't have a system for consistently generating emails and content for those emails, you'll still lose people."
Now they're thinking about a problem they didn't even know they had.
And because you just helped them with Problem A (for free, genuinely, completely), they trust you.
You've established yourself as the expert.
So when you offer the solution to Problem B... it's a no-brainer.
They've already sold themselves.
You're genuinely helping with Problem A. You're genuinely revealing a bigger challenge they need to be aware of.
And you're genuinely offering the solution.
The difference is when and how you're doing it.
You're selling at the right point in the relationship - after trust is established, after expert status is proven, after they've already decided you're the person who can help them.
Not before.
